Get To Know Goat

FDA Approves Goat's Milk Infant Formula & the AAP agrees it's an excellent option to nourish infants who are not breastfeeding.

Get To Know Goat. Yep, that’s what the branding slogan and the Kabrita website said, and so I

clicked through to see what’s new. I’ve been waiting for the FDA to approve goat’s milk infant

formula for three years, and it looks like we’re finally going to have that option for American

babies. In January of 2020, Ausnutria, a company in the Netherlands, presented completed

research data to the FDA for review and approval to sell their formula in the US. when the

Pandemic hit. Needless to say, priorities shifted. Time flies when you’re on lockdown!

Fast forward. It’s 2023 and I’m at the national meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics

where the experts just revised the Academy’s official infant feeding recommendations to

include goat’s milk formula. Breast is best, but when that’s not feasible or there’s insufficient

breastmilk supply, it’s official: both goat’s milk formula and cow’s milk formula are good

options to nourish an infant through the first year.

What’s this really mean for your baby? It means January 1, 2024, Kabrita Goat’s Milk Formula

will become the newest, choice for infant formula, properly regulated by the FDA, and if you’re

one of those parents getting goat’s milk formula on the "black market" you will no longer have

to deal underground. People buy baby formula on the "black market," you ask? Believe it or not,

they do!

Cow’s milk doesn’t agree with everybody’s digestion, and many families know that a dairy

sensitivity runs in the family. (This is different from a dairy allergy.) If you’re expecting a new

baby, and you already buy alternative “refrigerator milks” (like soy, oat or goat’s milk) because

cow’s milk doesn’t agree with you, Kabrita is a goat’s milk-based formula option, ok’d by the

FDA and the AAP, that’s now on the market if exclusive breastfeeding isn’t in the cards.

As more and more parents take the lead in deciding which formula to buy for their babies, it’s a

paradigm shift of sorts, away from the advice of a knowledgeable pediatrician to the many

other experts on infant feeding. For my part, make sure you have all the information you need,

and “get to know goat” as you do your research.

It's not what you say... it's how you say it. But sometimes, it IS what you say, and knowing how the experts communicate with children, big and small can often help parents. The post What Mothers Say Matters To Our Kids appeared first on Partners in Pediatrics.

With an organized roadmap to offer checkups and flu vaccines this fall, I’m proud to say that our practice vaccinated more than seventy five percent of the patients and the parents who come to us. It wasn’t an easy task, and there were some families who probably thought our email reminders were annoying. Five years later.  It’s official. Kids, I’ll no longer be asking you to take a teaspoon of medicine. I’m making the call to action for the pharmacists who prepare prescriptions for my patients to kick back any prescriptions if I forget to write in milliliters. When we ordered a new electronic health record, we picked one build for kids in an effort to improve the quality of the care we provide. The first shipment of COVID-19 vaccine arrived in Richmond this week.  I’m calling it a shot of hope, and I couldn’t be more hopeful and yes, excited to get my vaccine. This week, it’s about our Children’s Hospital… DID YOU KNOW?? Did you know that I have written about and wished for a real Children’s Hospital for Richmond for more than twenty years?  We could split hairs on the definition of a ‘real’ Children’s Hospital, but I’ll wager that you know one when you see one. I just finished reading an excellent blog post by Emily Oster written to help parents make decisions in CoronaVirus times.  She blogs at CovidExplained.org I’ve grown fond of saying that we are living through history, and in some ways, it softens the daily blows that come with actually having to do that.  This Coronavirus has […] The post Coronavirus Decision Making appeared first on Partners in Pediatrics.

COVID-19 Testing. It’s a featured topic on 60 Minutes in late June, 2020 and their investigative journalism has some surprising discoveries about how the FDA allowed antibody tests of varied accuracy onto the market. “The wonderful, beautiful immunity.”  That’s how the President described antibody protection in folks who have recovered from COVID-19.  We know that […] The post COVID-19 Tests.
